What was it that brought them together, to be united in this perfect love?

It all started when she found herself in mortal danger. She had resigned herself to her fate, but Emeraldio was her unexpected savior. From then on, Princess Mercuria was sometimes needy and close, but then suddenly cold and fearful. Emeraldio tried his best to hide his pain, but it was plain in his depths. That was how it was to this very day.

Yes. She often reflected upon that day with fondness. It was a day that had changed her life, after all.

Princess Mercuria, a sorrowful lady in the full bloom of youth, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the turquoise water with her mournful slate pools. Her ashen hair rustled lightly in the ocean breeze. She tried to deny the stirrings in her heart as she hummed "Crawling" to herself. The sun glinted off of her light-colored shoulders and a pair of pitch-dark formal pants. Hergranite coiffure brushed against her earlobes, complementing her empty ivory visage. A cinerescent growth of hair adorned her chin. For a moment, she absorbed herself in these thoughts, of her, and Emeraldio.

Princess Mercuria's granite windows to her soul spotted Emeraldio further down on the beach, closer to the roaring sea. His lovely viridian hair was tied on either side of his head. His spheres were turned toward the ocean, hidden from Princess Mercuria's sight, but she knew and loved their energetic sanguine hue. He was dressed in that exotic fashion in which he was most comfortable. He had a toned but slender body covered with cocoa skin. "My Emerald," she called, walking towards him.

He glanced back and a determined smile flashed across his face. "Hey. My Daisy."

Princess Mercuria shrugged and said only, "Let's go." They began their leisurely walk along the ocean's edge.

"How have you been, Princess Mercuria?" Emeraldio asked as they began their stroll together.

Princess Mercuria looked impassive as he replied, "As I've always been."

"Oh." He glanced awkwardly at her, fidgeting with his fingers to pass the time. "... Not very well?" She didn't humor him with a response. He reached for her hand, but she pulled away.

"You," she intoned in a low voice, "what is it that you want from me?"

That halted his in his tracks. "Princess Mercuria!" he pleaded. "I love you! I just thought... I'd let you know. That I'm here to listen." Princess Mercuria angled her body away. "Princess Mercuria... you were there for me. I... I've never forgotten that. No matter how much you push me away."

She kept walking in silence. Her slate coiffure shivered in a frosty wind. "It wasn't for you," she murmured.

"I don't care," he shouted against the wind and sea. "If it was only because you wanted me for yourself, it's all felt the same to me! Don't you understand? I chose you! I..."

"You chose to leave behind a place where you belonged," Princess Mercuria accused in a trembling voice. "I will never understand you. And you will never understand me."

His daring windows to his soul flashed and he yelled, "How would you know? Maybe I would understand, if only you'd let me know!"

"You ridiculous child," she muttered. "Go back to your playpen. Let the rest of us, who know well enough the futility of optimism, live in the real world."

"Child?!" He crossed his arms and pierced her with his glare. "You're the one who can't see past her own swishy hair! If only you'd...."

"If only I'd what? What is it?" she taunted.

"If only you'd love me," he whispered. "Do... do you love me, Princess Mercuria? That's... that's all I've wanted. That's why I chose you. Do you...?"

Something in his heart died when Princess Mercuria wordlessly turned her back on her and continued down the beach.
